• JOSÉ CARLOS DO PATROCÍNIO (1853 - 1905). Colored photo by Fernando Ribeiro.

He was a pharmacist, journalist, writer, orator, abolitionist and Brazilian political activist. He stood out as one of the most important figures of the Abolitionist and Republican movements in the country. He was also the founder of the Black Guard, which was formed by blacks and former slaves, whose purpose was to protect the newly acquired freedom as well as the welfare of Princess Isabel, as a gesture of thanks for the liberation of the slaves.
